Driver kills woman, injures infant in Anaheim; police suspect drunk driving
Published On: 07-14-2017 in Category: Addiction, Alcohol, Drinking
A woman recently lost control of her car while backing out of a gated residential complex off Nutwood Avenue between Ball Road and Beacon Street in Anaheim, killing a middle-aged woman and injuring her infant granddaughter, media reports said.
The female driver was on June 13 reportedly attempting to reverse her car when she lost control and crashed into 44-year-old Norma Revolorio and her one-year-old granddaughter, who was in a stroller at the time of the accident. Revolorio succumbed to injuries later at the hospital. Anaheim police suspect alcohol to be the cause of the accident.
DUI major cause of deaths in US
Statistics suggest that the presence of alcohol or drugs in a person’s system is the main cause of road rages and motor crashes in the U.S. Alcohol is entwined in American lifestyle. In fact, it is a socially and legally accepted drug. Right from shelves stocked with beer cans in the friendly neighborhood store to the latest mind-blowing advertisements on television, alcohol is predominantly visible everywhere.
As per the legal limit, driving under the influence (DUI) refers to a person behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher. But a uniform BAC level may not be applicable to every individual. Some people may be incapable of dividing their attention to perform multiple tasks at same time despite a BAC of 0.02 percent. On the contrary, the coordination, reaction time and ability to track moving objects of others may begin to go down at a BAC of 0.05 percent.
The rise in numbers of repeat offenses is a clear indicator that these individuals aren’t getting the right kind of counselling and treatment for alcoholism. The reason why myriads of otherwise intelligent and informed people often lose control of the wheel after a few drinks is because alcohol distorts neuronal pathways, which could lead to impaired judgment, delaying reaction time, preventing effective application of brakes.
Nowadays, a fine or a monetary penalty for breaking the law is not that much of a deterrent to many young people. Above all, a growing number of youth are beginning to view underage drinking as an innocuous rite of passage as long as it does not lead to an alcohol-impaired driving accident.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 28 people in the United States die every day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related accidents amounts to more than $44 billion.
